Prodn. of storage-stable animal feeds from protein-contg. green fodder plants (e.g. alfalfa, grass or clover) is carried out by (a) crushing or bruising the harvested plants without destroying their fibrous structure, (b) coagulating proteins by heating at 40-100 (pref. 60-75) deg.C for 2-4 min., and (c) mechanically dewatering the product. Step (a) is pref. effected by passing the plants between rolls revolving at different speeds. Step (c) can be effected by vacuum filtration, centrifuging, vibratory dewatering or pressing. An antioxidant is pref. added to the dewatered product, which can then be ground, pelletised and packed in opaque material. The process is inexpensive to operate and gives a product retaining practically all of the useful components of the plants. |
