The machine tool headstock contains a main spindle. A tailstock is located opposite to the free spindle end, and may be pivoted out of the plane of the spindle. The tailstock (15) is fastened to a tensioning carriage (17), which in turn is hinged via a horizontal shaft (18) to the headstock (10), and which may be pivoted in a vertical plane. When the former (14) is aligned with the spindle axis, the tensioning carriage is positioned horizontally above, and projects over the headstock. A lifting unit (19) is located between tensioning carriage and headstock, at a distance to the joint. The tensioning carriage is lowered into a unit on top of the headstock.
