The engine piston (8) reciprocates in a cylinder (1). The cylinder head (2) has a recess with two sloping sides. The piston has a crown with two sloping sides (9,10) which correspond to the sloping sides of the cylinder head recess. One of the piston sloping sides has a hemispherical recess (13) in it. The spark plug is in the area of the cylinder head opposite this recess. An annular channel (14) runs part of the way round the periphery of the piston crown from one sloping side (10) without the recess into the recess in the other sloping side.
