The contact bar, esp. for use on vehicles or on objects endangered by vehicles being parked, can also be mounted on a vehicle or on an obstacle. It indicates to the driver of the vehicle that it is close to or touching an obstacle. The contact bar is elastically deformable and takes the form of a bumper mounting or part of a trim strip with a sensor over the whole length. Deformation causes an optical and/or acoustic signal to be generated inside the vehicle. A hermetically sealed fluid container attached to the contact bar is connected to the indicator unit via a tube. The deformation of the bar causes a pressure variation in the fluid which is converted into an indication signal. Alternatively, mechanical electrical pressure transducers may be used.
