Several pairs of ladder sections are hinged together, and can be secured in selected operative positions. A position locking device is a disc (15), coaxial with the locking disc (3), turning on the hinge bolt (5), and bearing peripheral attachments (16), corresponding to the locking disc grooves, to form a stop face for the locking piece (7). The stop disc is engaged by a peripherally effective stop spring, pressing it against an end stop on one hinge (2), with the blocking piece raised when the attachments face the grooves. With the second hinge piece (1) swivelled in the spring direction, the locking piece slides over the stops in the folding direction. When swivelled in the other direction it causes the locking piece to strike the next stop face and turn the stop disc into a groove release position, with its recesses facing the grooves.
