PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF STYRENE

A process for the manufacture of styrene which comprises: (a) oxidizing toluene in the presence of an oxidation catalyst, and acetic acid or proionic acid to form an oxygenated product containing benzyl acetate or benzyl propionate;(b) contacting the oxygenated product formed in step (a) with a gaseous mixture containing carbon monoxide in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst to form phenylacetic acid;(c) hydrogenating the phenylacetic acid formed in step (b) in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to form phenylethyl alcohol; and(d) dehydrating the phenylethyl alcohol formed in step (c) to form styrene.
