PURPOSE:To surely detect pedestrians and the like by a method wherein the width of a glass panel in the lateral direction which covers light-emitting and light-receiving parts in a complementing (sensing) sensor for pedestrains, etc. provided on the left side of a vehicle is masked by a tape or the like interrupting infrared rays. CONSTITUTION:When pedestrians and the like entering a certain range on the lateral side of a vehicle are detected by a sensor 4 fitted to the bumper side of a cab C and by a sensor 7 fitted in the front of the side guard of a boading platform the complementing (sensing) range covered by the above sensors 4 and 7 is determined to be the area surrounded by the lateral part of the vehicle in an optional position which the vehicle running at a given speed and with the minimum turning radius occupies, by the left side line 91 of the vehicle in a position where it stops within the minimum distance for stopping from the former position, and by a locus 91 in the front end part on the outer-left side of the vehicle, formed by the above two positions. The area is shown by slant lines. Therefore, as for the sensor 4, for instance, the outside surface of a glass panel in a light-emitting part 40 is covered by a tape and the like interrupting the infrared rays, the angle theta1 from an axis 0 is left uncovered. |
