The appts. comprises a rotatable screw having an upstream and a downstream end. A tubular forming device is disposed around the screw and cooperates to define a quality changing chamber. A device feeds the material to be treated to the upstream end of the screw. A heater is associated with the tubular forming device to heat the material to maintain the temp. within the chamber at a predetermined value during operation. A driver is connected to the screw to rotate the screw to deliver the material fed to the quality chamging chamber while compressing the material. The material is delivered trhough the chamber toward the downstream end of the screw while the material is heated. The material is gradually changed in quality and solidified due to the compression by the screw and the heating. A sensor senses a parameter varying depending upon a load applied to the screw to generate a signal.
