PURPOSE:To form a high contrast dot (screen type) silver image, by imagewise- exposing a silver halide emulsion layer with a silver halide oxidant and a water- insoluble ion pair both present, and processing the layer with a superadditive developer. CONSTITUTION:A silver halide photographic material is prepared by adding to a silver halide emulsion an oxidant of silver halide, such an alkali metal permanganate (a), a water-soluble cationic compound, such as tetramethylammonium chloride (b), and a water-soluble anionic compound, such as sodium ethylmethylsulfonate (c) to give a water-insoluble ion pair resulting from combination of the above- mentioned components (b) and (c), and by coating and drying the emulsion obtained on a support. The above photosensitive material imagewise-exposed is processed with a developer containing a superadditive combination of developing agents, such as hydroquinone-metol series, and sulfite in a concentration of approximately 15g/l or more in terms of sodium sulfite.
