A rectangular steel tube is provided with oblong slots on two opposite walls. When the slotted section of the hollow tube is expanded outwards, a round chamber is produced to form an axle housing for the location of the differential gear. A hydraulically operated (22) expansion tool has two pairs of reaction rollers (6) between which the axle tube is located. Two jaws (3) which engage the tube slots are located between the fixed location rollers (6). As they are forced outwards by the cylinder action, the first stage of the axle tube forming is obtained.
