The S-cam is carried by a brake shaft 12 (e.g. operated by a spring- loaded cylinder through a rod linkage) and is forced by a spring 1 against a fixed brake carrier 8 to damp out vibrations, which occur when braking, irrespective of the direction of the wheel rotation. As shown a compression spring 1 with hardened faces 9, 10 is provided between a sleeve 2 and an abutment ring 3 to force the brake-expanding S-cam 13 into abutment against the brake carrier 6 by axially loading the brake shaft 12 which carries the cam. The S- cam 13 has a shoulder 11 held by spring 1 against a ring 14 fixedly integrated into the brake carrier 6.
