alpha 1-dialkyl-bibenzyl derivs. of formula (I) are new, R is H, alkyl or carboxylic acyl; R1 is alkyl opt. substd.; and R2 is halogen. (I) is specifically claimed where R = R1 = Me; R2 = F and the configuration is erythro. Four other specific examples are claimed. They are prepd. by acylating an aryl ether, reducing the acyl deriv. to an alcohol, converting this to a Grignard reagent and reacting this to give the bibenzyl deriv.
