The material is treated in the presence of water and a high-boiling solvent capable of maintaining the swollen state of the cellulose, with bisazo dyes of the general formula (I): <IMAGE> where X1 = H, alkyl or alkoxy having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, chlorine, bromine, -CN, -NHCOR1, -NHCO-Ar, -COOR, -CON(R1)2 or -NO2, X2 = H, alkyl or alkoxy having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, chlorine, bromine, -NHCOR1 or -NHCO-Ar, X3 = alkyl or alkoxy having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or else -NHCOR1 or -NHCO-Ar, Y = H, alkyl or alkoxy having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, chlorine or bromine, W = H or C1-4-alkyl, R = C1-C4-alkyl, R1 = H or C1-4-alkyl, Ar = substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, m = an integer from 1 to 3, and n = an integer from 1 to 3. This process, while retaining the application of the dyes in a single stage characterised by good affinity and low sublimation, permits uniform dyeings and prints which are fast to light, rubbing and washing, to be obtained.
