The active substances of the composition are novel binuclear pyrrolidone derivatives of the formula <IMAGE> in which the CF3 groups are preferably in the 3- and 5-positions of the phenyl radicals and X represents a C2-C12-alkylene, C4-C8-alkenylene or alkynylene group which is optionally substituted by halogen and/or interrupted by oxygen, or represents a C4-C8-cycloalkylene group or a phenylene or cyclohexanedimethylene group. The compositions are used for regulating, in particular inhibiting, the growth of plants (in particular grasses, such as lawns and cereals, tobacco, soybeans, ornamentals and the like).
