The plastics coatings of the pipes are first heated to highly plastic consistency, after which the pipe ends, as the heated plastics material on the outer circumference of the pipes is expelled, are pressed into a joining bush 15 having an internal diameter which is slightly less than the external diameter of the plastics coating of the pipes. In order to obtain good tensile strength for the joint and good rectilinearity in terms of the joined pipes, a joining bush 15 is used which, at at least one of its ends, is bevelled at 17 to form an outward- widening, conical section, and the joining bush 15 is heated to at least 175 degrees prior to the introduction of the pipe ends therein. The joining bush 15 used in implementing the process, at least at one of its ends, has a bevel such that the bush has an outward-widening, conical section 17 at the end in question. <IMAGE>
