It is known to provide a valve assembly in which a resilient housing has a passageway therethrough which is normally blocked by a plug located in the passageway. This form of valve assembly can be opened by inserting a rod or tube within the passageway to engage projections formed on the inside of the housing and thereby distort the housing away from the plug to form a fluid passageway between the plug and housing. In the present invention a valve assembly has a unitary plastics body located within a resilient housing of plastics material. The body is closed at one end by a dish-shape portion having a circumferential lip which forms a seal with the housing. The body has a tongue formed in its wall, one end of the tongue being provided with an inwardly directed tooth. By inserting a tube or rod within the valve element to engage the tooth, the tongue can be displaced outwardly and the overlying part of the housing can thereby be distorted away from the lip to permit fluid flow through the housing. The valve assembly may be used to seal one end of the inflation line of a cuffed medico-surgical tube. |
