In the hydrogenation of carbon-containing solid or liquid substances in a plurality of series-connected reactors, only a part of the reaction gas is, according to the invention, heated up in the annular spaces of the reactors and fed to the reactor feedstocks for purposes of the variable adaptation of the reaction gas heating to the particular chemical heat of reaction of the individual reactors and for minimising the pressure differential between the annular space and the reactor interior.
