Phased antenna array

In the case of an antenna array having a fixed radiating element grid, limited pivoting of the polar diagram in the plane of the rows of elements can be achieved in a low-cost manner by the rows of radiating elements being divided into sub-groups, and the relative sub-group phases being controllable separately by means of one phase shifter each. However, grating lobes occur at considerable levels even at slight polar diagram pivoting angles. In order to reduce the grating lobe level it is proposed to provide a plurality of row positions with sub-group boundaries which are displaced in the row direction by an integer multiple of the radiating element grid separation, and to arrange the radiating element rows in a quasi-random sequence with different row positions in the column direction.
