In the ships referred to here, the requirement is to transport containers (32, 33) of different size in a secured manner in cellular frames. However, it has been found that, in the case of the known cellular frames firmly installed on board, only one load consisting of a certain number of containers (32, 33) of a certain size can be accommodated, but in practice this load will scarcely be available for any particular trip. Therefore the existing stowage space in ships with fixed stowage frames can scarcely be utilised in practice. In addition, it has proven to be problematic to open cellular spaces (37, 38) of different size in the hold (31) without any difficulties for loading and unloading using conventional, movable hatch covers (44). To solve the abovementioned problems, the invention provides a hatch-cover arrangement which has a (larger) rolling cover (46) of conventional type of construction and a (longer) lifting cover (47) which can be shortened by a hinged section (50) for clearing sufficiently large sectional areas of the hold opening (39). Furthermore, cellular spaces of different size of the cellular frame can be formed by cell walls (68) movable in the hold (31) or on the hatch covers (44).
