Lathe for production of tapered shaft - uses lateral tool slide on longitudinal slide and driven gear train with input from pulley rolling on piano wire

The parallel lathe is used to machine tapered round bars and incorporates a transverse slide (4) mounted to a motorised longitudinal slide (2). The transverse slide locates the cutting tool (25) and two follower plates (19,20) with guide holes cantilever from a bridge (18). The plates position the plain bar (22) relative to the tool (25). Gradual transverse movement of the transverse slide is effected by a gear train (9,12). The output gear wheel (9) drives a screw (8), and the input gear (12) comprises a pulley wheel which rolls along a tensioned (15) piano wire (13). A hand lever (17) may be used to shift the wire to different pulley grooves (12a,12b,12c) to vary the conicity of the finished tapered bar (22a).
