The press, used to clamp together at least two angled workpieces, has a press element for each of the latter, driven in the longitudinal direction and with an automatic positioning device for each press element. The automatic positioning device includes a measuring element for the workpiece length coupled to the control circuit for the setting motor for the press element. Pref. two measuring elements are positioned directly adjacent one another in the direction of movement of the press element, so that this is moved towards or away from the counter block respectively when either or both elements detect the workpiece. The movement of the press element is halted when only one element detects the workpiece.
