The rotor is for polishing or milling various surfaces, particularly road surfaces, or for cutting faces in quarries or mines. It has cutting tools distributed about its circumference along at least two substantially helical curves. The curves are arranged in pairs to form at least one chevron whose apex is in the direction of rotation of the rotor. The tools on one curve are disposed to move the debris in one lateral direction and the tools on the other curve move the debris in the opposite lateral direction.
