Combined prodn. of ferro-silico-zirconium and zirconium corundum - from melt of zirconic concentrate, iron ore and aluminium to which alumina is added prior to casting

Ferro SiZr and Zr corundum are simultaneously made from a melt of zirconia concentrate, Fe ore and Al in a wt. ratio 51-60; 9-16.5; 19.8-34.8 at 1950-2000 degrees C to form an upper layer of Zr corundum and a lower layer of ferro Si Zr. Prior to casting the two layers, alumina is added to the melt in an amt. 0.5-50 wt.% on zirconia concentrate wt. Addn. of alumina ensures prodn. of Zr corundum with low impurity levels, e.g. (by wt.%) SiO2 0.5, CaO 0.4 and Fe 0.2, thus providing the Zr corundum with high abrasion props. It is suitable for making grinding discs etc. for force grinding ingots, etc. of special strength steels.
