The machine produces successive sections of wire, each sufficient to form a wound coil, which are initially wound into a helix before oressing the adjacent turns together to form the coil. The shears (2) for cutting the incoming metal into lengths sufficient for each wire coil has a pair of blades (3,4) each carried by a rotary arm. Each cut length is directed by a deflector (5) into a vertical chute and received bv a conveyor (7) below this. The shears (2) are coupled via an automatic control looo with the coil forming head, for synchronising the operation of the former with a particular angular position of the latter. This control looo pref. incorporates a photodetector in front of the shears supplying a signal to a control circuit for the shears which also receives an angular position signal from the coil forming head. The control circuit provides a release signal initiating operation of the shears at a qiven interval after initial detection of the wire by the photodetector.
