The fuel supply system for an engine includes a device defining a cavity (12) which communicates by way of an orifice (15) with a combustion chamber (10). A low-pressure fuel pump (17) supplies fuel to the cavity via a non-return valve (18) at a time when the pressure in the combustion chamber is low, e.g. towards the end of the suction stroke. Located in the cavity is an electrode (14) insulated by an insulator (13) from the wall of the cavity. With fuel in the cavity a spark discharge is caused to take place between the wall of the cavity and the electrode and the fuel and also air in the cavity expand through the orifice into the combustion chamber.
|
