Portable hanging sun-dial - is in form of flat plate or cylinder with demountable stylus carried on sprung clip

The sundial is in the form of a flat plate or a cylinder both having a suspension ring (12) at their top surface. In the flat plate case one side carries the time scale lines (2) drawn across parallel lines (7) corresponding to dates through the year and terminated at their upper end by holes (6) through the plate. The stylus (11) is held when not in use in a compartment (8) at the plate base and consists of a rod which fits into the plate date holes. In the cylindrical case the stylus is carried on a sprung clip fitting over the cylinder. The reverse side of the plate carries the date line identification (3) and a correction table (4) for local official time.
