Propulsion unit for space shuttle - has cover flaps to achieve low drag re-entry glide

The socket propulsion unit for a space shuttle has the thrusters covered by two sets of flaps to form a streamlined shape for re-entry glide. The sides of the flap space are covered by the twin tailplanes. One set of flaps covers the top of the drive unit and forms an extension of the top of the fuselage while the other flaps close off the thrust. For attitude correction prior to re-entry the craft is fitted with small external thrusters which position the craft so that the main thruster can be fired for braking. (DS).
