A power transfer case for a four wheel drive land cruiser is altered to provide overdrive capability. In one embodiment, a main drive gear 14 Fig. 4, is journaled for rotation about a main drive shaft 12 driven by the vehicle transmission system. A direct drive gear 20 is splined onto the shaft 12, as is an overdrive driving gear 26 which, through an idler 43, drives an overdrive driven gear 32 journaled for rotation about the shaft 12. A shift collar 54 is splined in continuous engagement with a hub 18 of the gear 14, and is shifted to engage either the direct drive gear 20 or the overdrive driven gear 32. In another embodiment a direct drive gear 202, Fig. 7, and an overdrive gear 208 are connected through an idler gear system 214 to a single driven gear 206 that is coupled by an output shaft 204 to the rear wheels of the vehicle.
