PURPOSE:To prevent unfavorable influence due to coloring from being exerted on the photographic characteristics of a silver halide photographic emulsion layer or a nonphotosensitive layer by coloring the layer with a specified methine dye which is decolored quickly and thoroughly after development and absorbs reflected light, scattered light, etc. CONSTITUTION:When a photographic emulsion layer is colored with a methine dye represented by formula I (where R1 is sulfoalkoxy or a group represented by formula II, each or R6 and R7 is alkyl or sulfoalkyl, at least one of R6 and R7 is sulfoalkyl, R2 is H or sulfoalkoxy, R3 is H or lower alkyl, each of R4 and R5 is H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or NO2, R4 and R5 are same or different, and X is O or S), the dye is added in a concn. of 1-3%. This compound has superior water solubility, is higher than a conventiona light absorbing dye in molecular extinction coefficient, and is effective in preventing irradiation halation. Image staining due to residual coloring after development does not occur to give a sharp image. |
