The spectroscopic analysing equipment is applicable to a substance of unknown composition. Units are provided for the generation of a source of radiation and an atomic cloud. The latter is irradicated by the former. A radiation measurer ascertains the amount of fluorescent radiation emitted from the atomic cloud. A monitor is assigned to the radiation source generating unit to supervise or control its output. The radiation source generation can be by excitation or energising of a probe. The atomic cloud generating unit can produce a cloud formed from atoms of a reference element. The radiation source unit can generate a radiation characteristic of a reference element. The cloud generating unit can produce a cloud formed from atoms of the unknown substance. The monitor can ensure that the radiation from the source is of a known intensity.
