Pesticide intermediate 3-phenoxy-benzaldehyde derivs. prodn. - by hydrolysis of 3-phenoxy-benzal chloride derivs. with salts of weak acids in a 2-phase system

In a new process for the prodn. of 3-phenoxy-benzaldehyde derivs. (I) by hydrolysis of 3-phenoxy-benzalchloride derivs. (II) in the presence of salts of weak acids, the hydrolysis is carried out in a reaction system consisting of an organic and an aqueous phase at pH ca 1-7 under a pressure of 2-100 bar (R1 and R2 are H or halogen). The reaction is pref. carried out in the presence of 1.0-10.0 wt. parts water per wt. part organic phase. The pH range of the reaction is advantageously stabilised with the aid of a buffer mixt. (I) are intermediates for pesticides. E.g. reaction of their cyanhydrins with cyclopropanecarboxylic acid derivs. gives insecticides and acaricides (c.f. DE2730515). (I) are prepd. in a 2-phase system without the use of an organic solvent.
