Technique for increasing the rain margin at transmitting (Fig. 3) and/or receiving (Fig. 6) stations of a communication system, e.g., a satellite communication system. In the present technique, spare Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) time slots in each frame sequence are shared among all stations as required by stations experiencing a fade condition which exceed a predetermined power margin. Additional power margin at a faded transmitter can be achieved by either increasing power transmission of a normal burst or by the use of spare time slots plus encoding (24) and preamble field extension (30) techniques for burst extension. Additional power margin to a faded receiver is accomplished by the use of burst extension and encoding (24) and field extension (30) techniques. Apparatus for implementing framing (74), carrier and clock recovery (60) and start of message detection (83, 84) using extended fields and coding techniques for other data at a transmitter and receiver are disclosed to overcome fade conditions.
|
