New procedure for increasing animal prodn. (esp. for improving feed utilisation and increasing milk output in ruminants) the ion concn. in the rumen is continuously measured telemetrically over a prolonged period, and adjusted to the optimal value by admin. of feedstuffs or feed additives. Pref., the rumen ion concn. is determined by measurement of rumen pH. The telemetric detector is pref. fixed magnetically in the rumen, and is pref. removable by means of a probe, e.g. a magnetic probe. Long-term telemetric measurement of rumenion concns. (esp. as expressed by rumen pH) provides a simple method of increasing animal prodn. by facilitating optimisation of feed admin., and enables acute acidosis and diseases attributable to mineral deficiencies to be avoided.
