Additives for lubricating oils are obtained by reacting an acidic molybdenum compound, a basic nitrogen-containing substance and a sulfur source, preferably in the presence of a polar promoter, to form a sulfur- and molybdenum-containing composition, which when incorporated in a lubricating oil inhibits oxidation, imparts antiwear and E.P. properties and/or modifies the friction properties of the oil. The polar promoter, when used, is preferably water. |
