Air (21) enters the compressor and is compressed adiabatically in the first stage (3). It then passes through a set of compressor stages (4) in which water (6) is continuously injected to give isothermal compression. This is followed by a final stage (5) of adiabatic compression. The mixture of compressed air and steam enters an expander. In the first section (14) of this combustion takes place in stator sections of increasing volume. Fuel (8) is injected throughout the stages as the gases expand so that there is an isothermal expansion. This is followed by an adiabatic expansion (15) and finally the gases are discharged (23) at a higher temperature than the intake.
