Electrical connection between insulated wire and tinned terminal - made by heating terminal to melt tin coating and removing wire enamel insulation

A typical application of making joints is in the mfr. of terminal connections for a small coil. The pretinned terminal strip (2) is placed on an electrode (1) which is heated by current impulses in a manner similar to the operation of an electric spot welder. The enamel insulated wire (3) is placed on the terminal strip and pressed against it by a glass disc (4). The pressure is applied at the same time as the electrode is heated. The heat destroys and largely evaporates the enamel covering. The tinning melts and flows round the bared wire to make the desired connection. Any enamel debris and solder particles adhering to the glass disc can be removed by rotating the disc past a scraper blade (5). The process and machine are readily adaptable to mass prodn. lines.
