Prodn. of C black for use in a dry cell battery compsn. involves heating a charge of C black, with a dibutyl phthalate (DBP) absorption of 200-250 cc/100 g and an average particle size distribution of 55-150 nm, to 1400-2400 (2200) deg. C in an inert atmos. and cooling below 325 deg.C in an inert atmos. The charge is heated for 9-21 s, using a heating rate of 100-150 deg.C/s. The particle size distribution can be bimodal between 52-58 nm and 112-118 nm. The starting material has a N2 surface area of 30-60 square metres/g. The prod. has an average particle size distribution of 50-120 nm, OBP absorption of 210-170 cc/100 g N2 surface area of 30-60 square metres/g and inter planar crystal lattice spacing of 2.7-3.7 nm. This treatment gives oil black properties at least as good as those of acetylene black.
