Additives for lubricating oils are obtained by reacting ammonium tetrathiomolybdate and a basic nitrogen-containing substance, preferably in the presence of a polar promoter, to form a sulfur- and molybdenum-containing composition which when incorporated in a lubricating oil inhibits oxidation, imparts antiwear and E.P. properties and/or modifies the friction properties of the oil. The polar promoter, when used, is preferably water. The basic nitrogen-containing substance may be a succinimide, carboxylic acid amide, hydrocarbyl monoamine, hydrocarbyl polyamine, Mannich base, phosphonamide, thiophosphonamide, phosphoramide or dispersant viscosity index improver. |
