A uniaxially oriented thermoplastic film having improved strength and clarity in the direction of orientation with unexpected improvement in strength in the transverse (unoriented) direction is disclosed. Preferred film materials are homopolymers and copolymers of ethylene having a density of 0.915 to 0.935 g/cm<3>.
