The device comprises one or more pipes (1) collecting the vapour originating from the boiler or from the preceding stage, bringing it under the actual tray (7), a nonreturn device (3) prevents the liquid returning from one stage towards the next; except when the stage is being drained, the volume of liquid contained in its lower part is stirred by one or more jets of vapour originating from the said pipes and promoting the transfer of material under the tray, the latter being attached to the walls of the stage (2) or limited by a short skirt (6), at a short distance from these walls, while the orifices of the tray and/or the space between the skirt and the walls allow the liquid to flow towards the low point (8) of the stage during the draining. Application to distillation, making it possible in particular to mount horizontally the various stages of a distillation "column". <IMAGE>
