In order to increase the concentration of foaming agent in a liquid, a mixture of foaming agent and liquid is foamed to produce a foam layer (23) on top of remaining liquid (22). Foaming agents are surface active and are therefore present in greater concentration at surfaces, so by removing, and if desired degrading, the foam layer a fraction of the liquid which is relatively rich in foaming agent is obtained. The above described method may be utilised in order to recover or recycle foaming agent in a foam filtering or foam reaction system. In such systems a gas or gaseous mixture (8) is brought into contact with a bed of foam (11) which degrades to a liquid (13) containing a substance or reaction product extracted from the gas or gaseous mixture.
