A process for selective sepn. of kaolinite and feldspar by flotation in an aq. sludge comprises conducting the flotation (a) at a sludge pH which occurs naturally by slurrying the mineral mixt. in water, (b) using water soluble salts with trivalent metal ions as activators and depressors, (c) in the presence of cationic and/or anionic surfactants as collector and (d) opt. with the addn. of other assistants conventionally used in flotation processes. Pref. the water soluble salts are chlorides and/or sulphates of trivalent metals, esp. of Al or Fe (III). A claimed activator is Al2(SO4)3. The activator concn. is pref. 50-2000 g/t, esp. 100-1000 g/t expressed as the anhydrous salt. The collector is pref. an anionic surfactant, esp. alkylebenzenesulphonates, petroleum sulphonates, fatty alcohol sulphates, ester sulphonates and/or alkylsulphosuccinates in which the alkyl gp. contains 12-18C. The collector concn. is pref. 50-2000 g/t, esp. 100-1000 g/t. The flotation slurry may also contain a foaming agent; foaming may be controlled by adding an antifoam agent.
