An S-shaped conduit, with a longitudinal axis, has three co-planar legs. Inlet leg and outlet legs have their inlet and outlet ends respectively connected to a support, and a return leg connects the inlet and outlet legs. The conduit is vibrated in a direction transverse to the plane of the three legs, and an increasing gradient of transverse velocity, and, therefore, transverse momentum of the flowing material is provided between the inlet and a maximum velocity point along the return leg. A decreasing gradient of velocity, and, therefore, transverse momentum of the flowing material is provided between the maximum point and the outlet. The vibratory force couple on the conduit about an axis perpendicular to the direction of vibration dur to the transverse momentum is sensed as a measure of the mass flow through the conduit.
