A method of contacting gas and liquid is described in which gas and liquid are introduced into a column, the liquid being introduced into the top of the column in the form of a stream of liquid of velocity sufficient to generate in the upper region of the column a substantially continuous foam. The geometry of the column and velocity of the inlet stream of liquid are adjusted so that there is a tendency of the incoming stream of liquid to disperse and reentrain coalesced bubbles, separating gas or larger bubbles at the top of the column into the foam. The method can be carried out continuously and very efficiently with economic energy usage. It is particularly of value in dissolving gases into water, particularly dissolving oxygen into water.
|
