To control the activation of an electrical resistance-wire igniter, a piezoelectric ignition device is proposed which comprises, inside a housing (10), a control mechanism (14), a piezoelectric generator (16) and an electrical transformer (18). The depression of a pushbutton (24) of the control mechanism (14) propels a mass (36) against the cap (52) of the piezoelectric generator. The high-voltage electric signal of very short duration which is thus produced is converted, in the transformer (18), into a low-voltage signal, the strength and duration of which makes it possible to actuate the igniter. As soon as the pushbutton (24) is released, a return spring (46) returns the control mechanism to its initial state, so that the device can be actuated several thousand times without maintenance. <IMAGE>
