For the thermal treatment stage of a yarn processing operation, using a UHF cavity, the excess voltage coefft. of the cavity is decreased by raising its loss. The lost energy is converted into infra-red energy in the zone close to the yarn being treated. The yarn to be treated runs parallel to the electrical field within the UHF cavity as it passes through it. To increase the excess voltage coefft., a tube is provided of glass or ceramic, or similar material, giving a high dielectric loss in the UHF range. The process ensures that heat penetrates to the core of the yarn, whatever its gauge, so that its treatment is consistent.
