The engine has two rows (2, 4) of cylinders. The rows are inclined to each other to give a V formation of cylinders. Along the length of the engine the cylinders (2, 4, 3) alternate between one row and the other. Each cylinder has a combustion chamber (8, 9, 10) in the underside of the cylinder head above the point reached by the piston. All the combustion chambers of both rows lie on the common centreline (1) of the engine. This aids damping of the noise of combustion and reduces the overall space requirements. The sparking plugs or fuel injectors (11, 12) enter the combustion chambers from alternate sides.
|
