The electromagnetic brake is supplied from the AC mains (12) via a rectifier (13), with its output (14) connected across the electromagnet (11) for controlling the brake. The supply circuit for the brake includes a capacitor (17), which is coupled in turn to a charging circuit (19) across the outputs (14) of the rectifier (13) and a discharge circuit (20) including the electromagnet (11). A relay (22) across the AC supply (12) controls the inversion contacts (18A, 18B) for coupling the capacitor (17) to the charging (19) and discharging circuit (20), as well as a delayed closure contact (18C).
