When slipping of a wheel is detected during its braking, a passage switch-over valve (8, 9) is switched over in order to allow the brake fluid inside a brake cylinder (2, 4) to escape into a low-pressure accumulator (10), thus reducing the pressure inside the brake cylinder. Furthermore, by driving a pump (11), the brake fluid which is accumulated in the low-pressure accumulator (10) is brought under pressure to be recycled to a brake fluid passage between the master cylinder (1) and the passage switch-over valve (8, 9). When the peripheral speed of the wheel has returned to a predetermined value, the passage switch-over valve (8, 9) is switched over, thus bringing the brake fluid from the pump (11) to the brake cylinder (2, 4) in order to increase the pressure in the brake cylinder once again. When the peripheral speed of the braked wheel has returned to a predetermined peripheral speed, a hydraulic braking pressure is produced a predetermined number of times in a pulsing fashion, after which the hydraulic braking pressure is increased again. As a result, the brake pedal (1b) may find itself displaced slowly, and the displacement of the brake pedal may be reduced, even when the vehicle is moving over a road surface which has a low coefficient of friction (low mu ).
