Each coupling member is used on a continuous chain conveyor (1) travelling in a vertical plane and is able - since it used in pairs - to convey a workpiece (P) provided with two opposite shaft-like extensions (PA) by means of which the workpiece is suspended from the two coupling members. Each coupling member (10) has a saddle-like space (12A, 12B) terminating in at least two claws forming a double concavity (14A, 16A), one concavity facing the bottom of the saddle and the other concavity facing the claw itself. During travel in one direction, the workpiece is held in the saddle, then along the profile (12A, 13A, 14A) of the claw and is retained in said concavity (14A, 16A), to then fall once more into the saddle. <IMAGE>
